Damp-rated Super Duty Fans

Imagine getting your hands on what you think is the perfect ceiling fan for your barn or auto body shop. It’s the right size for the space, it’s quiet, and it has all the features to create big air movement for improved productivity. So, you get it out of the box, mount it, and then get back to work. It’s perfect! Over time, though, you notice it’s not working as well as it used to. It still looks good, but it’s not moving enough air anymore and isn’t holding up to the tough environment.

Obviously, you’re disappointed! What just happened is that you likely purchased a fan that, although it looked good on paper, wasn’t damp-rated — and it happens to more folks than you think. Believe it or not, there is a major difference between indoor and outdoor ceiling fans, and knowing this will save you a ton of time, energy, and frustration.

The good news is that all fans at Super Duty Fans are damp-rated! See our selection here.

Indoor vs. Outdoor fans and damp-rated

All ceiling fans, whether they were built for commercial or residential use, are subject to a rating system to help buyers determine which is the best one for the location they intend to use it for. Indoor fans, which are dry-rated, are meant for indoor use, such as in a bedroom, living room, foyer, waiting room, business office, or dining room. They work great, but they are limited in that they will not function properly if exposed to water or moisture.

Conversely, outdoor fans are either damp-rated or wet-rated. Granted, they are universal in that they can be used indoors, too. But they are typically located outside. Damp-rated ceiling fans can be mounted in areas that have no direct exposure to water, rain, or snow but can handle their fair share of moisture in damp areas and still keep the air circulating in that area for years to come.  Additional locations for a damp-rated ceiling fan include:

  • Barns
  • Industrial plants
  • Warehouses
  • Auto body shops
  • Welding shops
  • Aviation hangars
  • Covered patio
  • Screened porch
  • Carports
  • Garages

If you need a fan for 100% outdoor use, it must be wet-rated. These fans can handle anything that Mother Nature throws at them. Essentially, you could hit it with a water hose, and it’d be perfectly fine.
